Early Years

Sir Elton John was born to Stanley Dwight and Sheila Eileen on 25th March, 1947 in Pinner, Middlesex. He got his education from Pinner Wood Junior School and Pinner County Grammar School but at 17 he left school to pursue a professional career in music.

Elton John was gifted in music since childhood. At the age of 3 he surprised his family when he sat at the piano and played The Skater's Waltz by ear. Soon he began performing at small family gatherings and parties. Even at such a young age he had the ability to compose music. Within a very short time John gained popularity in his school for his music skills and at 11 won a scholarship to the prestigious Royal Academy of Music where he performed as a Junior Exhibitor. Here he attended Saturday classes for the next four years. Although Elton was not an enthusiastic classical student, he found himself enjoying playing the Bach and Chopin. He stated,

"I kind of resented going to the Academy. I was one of those children who could just about get away without practicing and still pass, scrape through the grades."

The credit of Elton John's upbringing goes to his mother and grandmother as his father was mostly away. His mother later got married to a painter and moved into an apartment, Frome Court. This is where Elton wrote a number of songs which went on to launch his career as a rock star. The multi-faceted musician continued to live in the apartment even after he had four of his albums reach the American Top 40 consecutively.

Struggling Days

During his teens Elton John began working as a weekend pianist in a pub at the Northwood Hills Hotel. Popularly known as 'Reggie,' Elton played a variety of songs here including those by artists such as Ray Charles and Jim Reeves. Other than these, he also performed numbers that he had composed himself. Soon after he joined his first band called The Corvettes.

In the year 1962, The Corvettes was re-formed as Bluesology. While playing as part of Bluesology during the mid 60s, Elton also performed solo gigs in the evenings at a hotel bar in London, while during daytime he worked in a music publishing company. With John as a member, Bluesology gained new heights and playing as a backing band for R&B and soul musicians such as Major Lance, Isley Brothers, the Bluebelles and Patti LaBelle.

Partnership with Bernie Taupin

Songwriter Bernie Taupin, known for his long term collaboration with the Elton John actually met him when the two answered an advert by the Liberty Records in the New Musical Express. They were introduced by Ray Williams, an employee at the Liberty Records. The two began working together and produced a number of compositions, with the lyrics written by Bernie and music by Elton John. Towards the end of the 1960s, they began working for Dick James' DJM label as staff songwriters. The collaboration of the two went a long way and they wrote many songs not only for Elton John's collection but for various other music artists.

The Big Break

Elton John's touring career began flourishing in the 1970s as he was performing in a number of clubs. These include The Marquee, The Speakeasy, The Roundhouse and The Revolution in London, the Twisted Wheel in Manchester and Mothers in Birmingham. In 1970 Elton John performed his first concert in the US. Held in LA at The Troubadour, the show was a big success and made the singer an overnight sensation. Since then there has been no looking back for the multitalented musician. He has been touring extensively around the world and his concerts are known to sell out quickly.

Debut

Elton John's self-titled debut album came out in 1970. It featured the track 'Your Song' which went on to become Elton's first major recorded hit. The song made it to the seventh spot on the UK Singles Chart and eighth in the US. The record itself made its way to the fourth position on the US Billboard 200 and fifth on the UK Albums chart.

The 1970s saw the release of an amazing fourteen records by Elton John. These include Don't Shoot Me I'm Only the Piano Player, Blue Moves, Rock of the Westies, Goodbye Yellow Brick Road and Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy. The latter was the first of John's albums to top the Billboard chart, whereas Goodbye Yellow Brick Road ruled the Billboard Top 100 for two straight months.

In 1973, Elton John left DJM Records to launch his own label, The Rocket Record Company. He formed this company with friends Bernie Taupin, Steve Brown and Gus Dudgeon and named it after the very popular number, 'Rocket Man.'

Stackridge was the first music artist to sign with the label. He left the MCA to complete two records with Elton's music company. Among other popular artists who were signed to the label were The Hudson Brothers, Brian & Brenda Russell, Kiki Dee, Colin Blunstone, The Lambrettas, Cliff Richard and Neil Sedaka. The latter's three biggest hit albums were released on Rocket.

'Sacrifice'

Elton John's first number one solo single in the UK is 'Sacrifice'. The track was the second single of the record 'Sleeping in the Past' that was released in 1989. The single was then re-released the following year and gained a lot of popularity in both France and the UK where it spent five weeks at the top on the charts. 'Sacrifice' is among the best work that Elton John and Bernie Taupin have done together. In an interview Taupin said he was surprised he wrote this song. He further stated, "I think 'Sacrifice' is one of the best songs we've written. The song is not a typical love song, but rather a song about a breakup of a marriage where the loss of the relationship is "no sacrifice."

Bestselling Single of All-time

It is a known fact that Elton john was a very good friend of the late Princess Diana. Following her sad demise in 1997, Elton John and Bernie altered the lyrics of their 1973 song 'Candle in the Wind' to pay tribute to her. The earlier version was a tribute to the famous Hollywood actress, Marilyn Monroe. The opening lines were altered from 'Goodbye Norma Jeane, though I never know you at all' to 'Goodbye England's rose, may you ever grow in our hearts' while the line 'Even though we try, the truth brings us to tears' was changed to 'Even when you died, the press still hounded you.'

This heartfelt tribute song was released on 30th September 1997. The track sold 658,000 copies on the day of its release and more than 1.5 million in the first week. The song helped raise a lot of money for the Diana, Princess of Wales Memorial Fund and went on to sell 33,000,000 copies, thus becoming the best and fastest selling single in UK history. The track has been performed only once by Elton John and that was at the funeral of Princess Diana. Although he has performed the original version several times at his concerts, he has refused to sing the revised version unless requested by Diana's sons.

Lion King

Among the highlights of the Disney animated movies are its songs and Lion King has a variety of them. The popular tracks from this blockbuster movie such as Can you feel the love tonight, I just can't wait to be king and Hakuna Matata are all composed by Elton John. When in 1991, Disney signed Tim Rice for the lyrics of The Lion King, they asked him to suggest a name for the music and he instantly recommended Elton John. The rest is history. Today Lion King stands tall as the highest grossing movie of the Walt Disney Animation Studios.

At the 1995 Annual Academy Awards, three of Elton John and Tim Rice's compositions namely Circle of Life, Hakuna Matata and Can you feel the love tonight got nominated in the 'Best Song' category. The song Can you feel the love tonight won an Oscar and an emotional Elton John received his trophy from Sylvester Stallone, dedicating it to his grandmother who had died a week before.

Did You Know... • The pianist took his stage name from the saxophonist Elton Dean and lead singer Long John Baldry of the music band Bluesology. Later on it also became his legal name. • Elton John and his songwriting partner Bernie Taupin never write a song together. Bernie writes the lyrics first and John later composes the music for them. • John Lennon and Elton John had a bet that if John's song Whatever gets you through the night featuring Lennon make it to the number one spot, Lennon would perform live with Elton. The song did hit number one and so Lennon gave his last performance on Thanksgiving Day in 1974. It was Lennon's last performance before he was assassinated and thus a memorable one. • John holds the record of performing the maximum number of concerts at the Madison Square Garden in New York at 64. • On the 13th of September, 1980 Elton John performed a free concert that witnessed an audience of nearly 400,000.
